Undercurrent (n.) 1. a current that is not apparent at the surface or lies beneath another current. 2. an opinion, emotion, etc., lying beneath apparent feeling or meaning.

Undercurrent is an alliance of two similarly-minded emcees; Lixx and Baron Samedi. United by their passion for the creative arts, nature and the supernatural, these two whirlwinds of imagination decided to join forces around the turn of the millennium and haven’t looked back since. Over the last 8 years they have released an LP, EP and a mixtape as Undercurrent and have played to a wide spectrum of crowds up and down the country. In this time, Baron Samedi has also released two solo albums and a mixtape (as well as two 12” singles), and produced for a number of other artists. Lixx has featured on several other projects and is a hairs breadth from completing work on his first solo LP (all these products are available in the shop).

Their mission statement? To make music that goes deeper than the material trappings of modern life, pushing the boundaries of language and imagination to a backdrop of original, top-quality hip-hop. Undercurrent really come into their own in story-telling mode (see Gamblers Anonymous, or The Drowning), but are adept at any topic they turn their hands to. Pop music satire (The Formula, Fame Academy), post-apocalyptic worlds (Save Me From My Enemies), ruined love (X), serial killers (Unamerican Psycho), social commentary (The News), monkeys! (Simian Theory), or just straight up bangers (Ripping Yarns, Drop The Anchors, Brothers Grimm)… No stone is left unturned. No matter how many times you listen, you will always find something new.
